2017 President's Message

I am proud to be able to serve as ACI Greater Michigan Chapter President for 2017.  Prior to 2012 when I was asked by past president Ruben Ramos to join and participate on the ACI Chapter board, my experience with ACI was limited to technician certification / training and referring to ACI standards. I was not aware of the breadth of the expertise within the Chapter membership and the varied ways that the Chapter strives to serve membership and give back to the industry.

To begin, I would like to thank Russell Bennett for his contributions and service to the industry as the 2016 Chapter president. At the time of this writing, the Chapter has an active diverse membership of 208 owners, engineers, architects, educators, students, contractors and material suppliers.

Monthly dinner meetings are held throughout the year to facilitate networking, maintaining professional relationships and development of new relationships. Each meeting also includes educational opportunities, technical presentations, recent project overviews and case studies intended to provide our membership opportunities to continue learning about new processes, materials, products and projects in our ever-changing industry. We aren’t all business; social activities this year include the Tigers Game in June and golf outing in September and annual meeting in December, which will feature a Cirque du Soleil show at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.

In 2014 I also had the privilege of attending the ACI international officers training in Farmington Hills with fellow Vice President John Perry and Past President Russell Bennett.  The training illuminated the variety of products and services that ACI International offers to the membership, and insight regarding the challenges and opportunities realized by ACI Chapters throughout the United States and throughout the world.

A highlight of 2017 was the ACI Concrete Convention and Exposition that was held in Detroit on March 26th–30th, 2017.  The convention had near-record attendance, and provided an opportunity for all attendees to experience ACI committees and the processes that are used to develop ACI resources and standards, learn about technical developments in the industry and hear case studies and project overviews from around the world. A highlight was the Concrete Mixer held at The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn.

Finally, I am especially thankful for the relationships that I’ve developed with our board and Chapter membership and look forward to doing my part toward continuing the decades-long tradition of service to the industry with the ACI Greater Michigan Chapter.
